Long ago in ancient China, there was a beautiful woman named Chang’e. She lived with her husband, Hou Yi, a brave and kind man who was known for his strength and skill in archery. Together, they lived a peaceful life in the mountains.
One day, a terrible disaster struck the world. Ten suns appeared in the sky at the same time, scorching the earth and causing great suffering to people and animals. The land dried up, rivers ran dry, and crops withered. People cried out in fear and desperation.
Hou Yi, moved by the pain of the people, took up his bow and arrows. With great courage, he shot down nine of the suns, leaving only one to light the sky. This act saved the world from destruction and earned him great respect and admiration.
As a reward for his bravery, the Queen of Heaven gave Hou Yi a magic elixir that could grant immortality. However, Hou Yi did not want to live forever without his beloved wife, Chang’e. He decided to keep the elixir safe, waiting for the right moment to share it with her.
But not everyone was happy with Hou Yi’s success. A jealous man named Feng Meng, who was once his apprentice, learned about the elixir and wanted it for himself. One day, while Hou Yi was away, Feng Meng broke into their home and demanded the potion.
Chang’e, knowing that the elixir would make her immortal but also separate her from her husband, made a quick decision. She drank the elixir herself, and immediately, she began to float upward into the sky. She could not stay on Earth anymore, and so she rose to the moon, where she now lives alone.
Hou Yi was heartbroken. Every year, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, he would offer food and fruits to the moon, hoping to see his wife again. This tradition became the Mid-Autumn Festival, a time when families gather together to remember love, unity, and the beauty of the moon.
And so, the story of Chang’e and Hou Yi has been passed down through generations, a touching tale of love, sacrifice, and the magic of the moon.
